What are Thyroid Disorders?
The Thyroid is an Endocrine Gland. Its main function is to release hormones that are responsible for many important internal functions of the body. Thyroid controls functions like metabolism, brain development (especially in infants), heart and muscle functioning, and Body Temperature. Thyroid Gland releases collective hormones. Thyroxine and T4 are the main examples of Thyroid Gland secreted hormones. According to medical researches, hormones secreted by the Thyroid gland have affected almost all the metabolic processes in the human body.
Thyroid Disorders are the malfunctioning conditions in which the Thyroid gland release either too many hormones or too little. If the Thyroid gland releases too many hormones, this situation is known as Hyperthyroidism and if it secretes too little, the situation is known as Hypothyroidism. Both these situations can be catastrophic to organ functioning. These situations are also dangerous for your health. From these two conditions, several Thyroid gland related diseases arise. These diseases are known as Thyroid Disorders. Specific Thyroid disorders includes disease like,
- Grave’s Disease (Overactive Thyroid)
- Thyroid Cancer
- Thyroid storm
- Thyroiditis (Inflammation in thyroid)
According to researches, Thyroid Disorders are gender-specific to some extent. The chances of development of Thyroid disorders are more in women than men. The major signs and symptoms of Thyroid Disorders include,
- Quick weight gain or loss
- Neck and Throat swelling
- Severe Fatigue
- Fluctuation in body temperature
- Muscle and joint pain
- Reproductive malfunctioning
- Cognitive issues like short memory.
Can CBD help with Thyroid Disorders? It is a very hot question nowadays, especially from the medical perspective. CBD (Cannabidiol) is the chemical extract of cannabis (hemp plant). People have used CBD for treating different physiological conditions for decades. But still, there is very little information available about the medical use of CBD for treating Thyroid Disorders.
According to some independent research studies, CBD may have the ability to treat or alleviate some of the symptoms of Thyroid Disorders. But unfortunately, the alleviation mechanism of CBD is not completely understood by the researchers. Some research studies have reported that CBD Oil alleviates many symptoms of Thyroid Disorders by interacting with the body’s Endocannabinoid System. We will explain this mechanism in detail.
CBD can alleviate the pain and inflammation in the neck and throat caused by Thyroid Disorders:
Pain and inflammation in the neck or throat are major signs and symptoms of Thyroid Disorders. CBD can alleviate both pain and inflammation by interacting with the body’s Endocannabinoid System. The Endocannabinoid system is actually responsible for the homeostasis of our body. Medical researchers have reported that the Endocannabinoid System is responsible for the regulation of many functions in the body, such as metabolism, sleep, motor control, muscle formation, pain reception, and production of inflammation responses. The Endocannabinoid system is made up of three main components,
- Endocannabinoid Receptors
- Endocannabinoids Enzymes
The most important component which plays a vital role in the alleviation of Thyroid Disorder symptoms is Endocannabinoid Receptors. Endocannabinoid receptors have two main categories. CB1 receptors and CB2 receptors. CB2 receptors are particularly responsible for pain reception by CNS (Central Nervous System) and inflammation production responses.
CBD interact and bind with CB2 Endocannabinoid receptors and bring changes in them. This complex of CBD and CB2 receptors is very helpful in addressing pain and inflammation issues caused by Thyroid Disorders.
Just like in the case of the Endocannabinoid System, CBD interacts with the Serotonergic system of the body and reduce anxiety. The serotonergic system of the body is responsible for emotions and behavior. CBD manipulates the Serotonergic system to reduce anxiety, depression, and counter sudden mood swings. But the only problem with this mechanism is that it is not proven by clinical studies on humans.
CBD may reduce the chances of Thyroid Cancer:
According to research studies, CBD may reduce the chances of Thyroid Cancer. CBD has the ability to inhibit the growth of both malignant and benign thyroid lesions. The growth of malignant and benign thyroid lesions is the basic reason for Thyroid Cancer. The Thyroid Cancer reducing ability is not very much proven by medical studies. Only one researches study was published back in 2015. In this study, scientists investigated the effects of CBD on the Thyroid lesions. The results of this study were not sufficient to support CBD uses for Thyroid Cancer.
How to take CBD for Thyroid Disorders?
CBD is available in different forms in the market. CBD Oil, capsules, tablets, and CBD vaping are some popular forms of CBD. CBD is the best of way of talking CBD for Thyroid Disorder. You can place 4-5 drops of CBD oil under your tongue and it will automatically enter the bloodstream. CBD Oil requires only 4-5 minutes to react. On the other hand, CBD vaping is a method that involves inhaling vapors of CBD. This method requires very much less time to react because CBD can quickly enter into the blood and brain through the lungs. CBD vaping has some limitations. The chance of contamination is very high in CBD vaping because vapors enter the body by passing through the air. For this reason, CBD Oil is the best method for taking CBD for Thyroid Disorders.
CBD can alleviate and reduce some symptoms of Thyroid Disorders such as pain, inflammation, and cancer of the Thyroid. The use of CBD is not scientifically proven but some independent research studies reported that CBD can help with Thyroid Disorders.
