FIFA World Cup 2026: How the UEFA Playoffs Work

The UEFA Playoffs determine four of the six remaining World Cup spots in late March 2026. Sixteen European teams compete across four separate playoff paths. Here is how the process works.

WHY UEFA HAS PLAYOFFS

UEFA has 55 member nations competing for World Cup spots. The FIFA World Cup 2026 UEFA Playoffs allocates 16 spots to UEFA teams. Twelve spots are determined through direct qualification from European qualifying groups. Four additional spots go to teams that win the UEFA playoff paths.

The playoff system gives teams that narrowly missed direct qualification a second chance. Nations ranked just below the automatic qualifiers, including some with significant football histories, can still earn their World Cup berth through the playoffs.

THE FOUR PLAYOFF PATHS

UEFA runs four separate playoff paths simultaneously. Each path has four teams in a semifinal and final format. The four paths are labeled A, B, C and D.

Playoff Path A
Teams: Italy, Wales, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Northern Ireland
Semifinal 1 A: March 26, 2026
Semifinal 2 A: March 26, 2026
Final A: March 31, 2026

The winner goes into Group B (Canada, Switzerland, Qatar, UEFA PO-A Winner).

Italy are the heavy favorites in Path A. The four-time world champions failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. Qualifying for 2026 through the playoff would prevent a second consecutive absence for one of football's most historically significant nations.

Playoff Path B
Teams: Ukraine, Sweden, Poland, Albania
Semifinal 1 B: March 26, 2026
Semifinal 2 B: March 26, 2026
Final B: March 31, 2026

The winner goes into Group F (Netherlands, Iran, New Zealand, UEFA PO-B Winner).

Ukraine bring an emotional dimension to their qualification campaign. Poland have Robert Lewandowski as their talisman. Sweden have a post-Zlatan generation looking to establish their own identity.

Playoff Path C
Teams: Türkiye, Romania, Slovakia, Kosovo
Semifinal 1 C: March 26, 2026
Semifinal 2 C: March 26, 2026
Final C: March 31, 2026

The winner goes into Group D (USA, Paraguay, Australia, UEFA PO-C Winner).

Türkiye are the highest-ranked team in Path C and favorites. They reached the semifinals of Euro 2020. Romania have historical World Cup pedigree from their 1990s golden generation. Slovakia and Kosovo represent less established programs seeking their first World Cup.

Playoff Path D
Teams: Denmark, Czech Republic, Republic of Ireland, North Macedonia
Semifinal 1 D: March 26, 2026
Semifinal 2 D: March 26, 2026
Final D: March 31, 2026

The winner goes into Group A (Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, UEFA PO-D Winner).

Denmark are the favorites in Path D. They reached the semifinals of Euro 2020 in an emotional tournament following Christian Eriksen's cardiac arrest during their opening game. The Czech Republic, Ireland and North Macedonia all have realistic hopes of advancing.
